Spider-Man and the Horror of Adolescence

Hello my lovely readers,

The other night I was rewatching The Amazing Spider-Man, the 2012 cinematic masterpiece starring Andrew Garfield as the iconic web-slinger navigating grief, the woes of being a teenager, and newfound superpowers. As many times as I watched any Spider-Man movie, I was always wrapped up in the thrilling action scenes, the emphasis on the beauty of human compassion, and the sprinkles of romance. However, this time I could not shake this feeling of terror, the discomfort in watching Peter Parker grapple with his changing body. Watching him suddenly be able to skitter up walls, unsettlingly fast reflexes, and rip a web with a dead spider attached at the end from the bite in his neck would've
evoked feelings of fear if portrayed in another setting. And don't even get me started with watching Dr. Connors trying to "fix" himself by turning himself into a giant humanoid lizard down to the scaly skin, limb regeneration, and all. Then, it hit me... Spider-Man is a horror movie just with a more upbeat soundtrack.

Fall TBR

Hello my lovely readers,

The leaves are beginning to change; a slight breeze outside, and it's finally October, meaning fall is in the air. The bringing of autumn calls for two things: a Gilmore Girls and Smallville rewatch, and a new to be read list.

I am recently getting over a 3-month reading slump, with me starting several books, but not finishing any, so that's why none of the books on my list really have a "fall theme."

Anyways, are any of these books on your tbr? Have you already read any?

With love,

Zoe Selah

AMAZE, AMAZE, AMAZE!

Genre: Sci-fi
Author: Andy Weir
Rating: 4.5/5⭐

Hello my lovely readers,

One of my favorite movies to come out this year, and maybe of all time is Project Hail Mary. This movie has managed to bewitch me leaving me with this beautiful sense of hope, and memorable lines that have become staples in my everyday conversation. So, of course I had to read the book, and I will say it did not disappoint!

The sci-fi novel follows Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher, who awakes from a coma in a spaceship known as the Hail Mary, with no memory of who he is or how he got there. As Grace's memory returns to him, he discovers that he must save Earth from an impending ice age caused by mysterious microbes eating the sun. During this mission, Grace forms an unlikely friendship with an alien, Rocky, looking to save his planet from mass extinction also caused by the ravenous cells. Together, they discovered how to save their species, while learning that not everything has to be done alone, and that courage is not absence of fear, but instead selflessness.

I really appreciated how in-depth the scientific portions were, even though I did get a little lost at times. However, the best part was friendship between Grace and Rocky. It was just so beautiful to see how Grace's and Rocky's friendship is able to transcend time, space, and species, and how they are so willing they are to risk their lives for each other. They are a perfect example of how not all soulmates are romantic nor the same species.

I definitely recommend this if sci-fi and found family is your thing!
